Information re: back to school

Posted: August 30, 2020

Members of the CMS Family, welcome back to school!

On August 31st, teachers will be back at work preparing for the upcoming school year.  We have missed our students and we are looking forward to seeing all of them soon.  Though this will be a different year for all of us, we will do our best to ensure that your child has a great start to this new school year.

We would like to share some information regarding a few of the new routines and expectations this year:

  • Arrival in the morning will begin after 8:00am, behind the school.  Students will be directed to their respective class groupings.  They will remain in their group until 8:25 am when they go to their homeroom class.
  • Breakfast program foods will be available in baskets in classrooms upon entry.
  • Parents can use the drop off area in front of the school after 8:25am.  At that time students will be able to enter by the office doors at the front of the building.  Parents are asked to remain in their vehicle.
  • Parents/guardians & visitors will not be able to enter the school without a scheduled appointment, please call Mrs. Judy Letourneau-Carter at 789-2120 to book an appointment.
  • All visitors to the school with an appointment must wear a community mask at all times.
  • In order to pick up their child at school during the day, parents will call the main office from their vehicle or use the intercom at the front door to relay message to our Admin Assistant that they have arrived.
  • Each student must come to school with a clean community mask every day.
  • Students in grades 6 to 8 must wear their mask on the school bus and in common areas of the school.
  • Students in grade 5 are strongly encouraged to wear a mask in common areas of the school.
  • Within their class bubble, students will not need to wear a mask and are not required to physically distance from one another, although they are free to do so.
  • Physical distancing (2m) will be required between students from different class bubbles.  This will also apply to lunch, recess, transition between classes, breaks, dismissal, etc.
  • Parents are required to check for symptoms every morning and keep their child home if they are not feeling well.
  • Students who become symptomatic throughout the school day will be required to wear a community mask until they leave the school.  Parents/guardians will be called and are required to pick them up as soon as possible.
  • All students must come to school with a filled water bottle every day.  The water fountains are not presently available, and the cafeteria will not be selling water bottles to students during class time.  We will let you know once we have our bottle-filling water dispensers installed.
  • For most of the day, students will remain in their homeroom classes and subject teachers will move between classes to teach them.
  • Cafeteria services will not be available until at least September 21st.  More information will be sent to you soon.
  • Physical distancing will be used between bubbles in cafeteria. There will be assigned seating areas for classes.
  • Students from one class bubble who wish to use the microwave will do so when instructed.  After the students from one class have used the microwave, the touch surfaces will then be cleaned and disinfected before being used by another class.  This may reduce the number of students who are able to use the microwave at lunch time.
  • Students are encouraged to bring a lunch from home which will not need to be warmed up in a microwave.
  • At the end of the day, students who walk home will be dismissed first at 3:05pm, followed shortly after by students who have a drive.
  • At this time, there is no expectation for CMS students to supply their own laptop or personal electronic devices.

 Staggered Entry:

This school year, we will be having a staggered entry for students.  This staggered entry will provide time for students and staff to become familiar with our new policies and procedures and also work on daily routines with our students.  The schedule is as follows:

  • September 7th - Labour Day (No School)
  • September 8th - Grade 5 students only
  • September 9th - Grade 6 students only
  • September 10th - Grade 7 students only
  • September 11th - Grade 8 students only
  • September 14th - All students

Our complete operational plan will be shared with parents/guardians on September 3rd.  Thank you for your continued support.  We are looking forward to starting a new year at CMS!
